Critically examines explanations of historians, sociologists and anthropologists for falling homicide rates over the long term. Specific subjects include: capital punishment for murder; rise of sensationalist fiction and journalism; growing role of police investigation; public responses to particular, infamous murders; emergence of serial killer as pop culture phenomenon.
